How we research, verify, review, and correct housing information for Chicago renters.

Last reviewed:

Chicago Affordable Housing Guide is written by the Chicago Affordable Housing Guide Editorial Team. We use that team byline when individual author names, credentials, or biographies are not available. We do not claim legal, government, brokerage, landlord, or housing-authority authority.

Our goal is to make official affordable housing information easier to understand while keeping a clear line between official sources and our own plain-language explanation.

How guides are researched

We start with official program materials, public datasets, and property-level documents. We then translate those materials into renter-focused steps, definitions, examples, and checklists. When a page includes our own interpretation, we identify what was verified and what the sources do not confirm.

Preferred sources

  • City of Chicago Department of Housing pages, maps, PDFs, and Open Data records
  • Chicago Housing Authority program pages and official application portals
  • HUD program descriptions, published income-limit materials, and LIHTC references
  • Official property websites, leasing pages, FAQs, application notices, and property PDFs
  • Municipal ordinances and public government records when program rules are legal or policy-specific

Income-limit verification

AMI and income-limit figures are pulled from one canonical site dataset based on the City of Chicago 2026 Income and Rent Limits, effective May 1, 2026. Pages should not retype or round those figures independently. When an AMI table or exact income figure appears, the page includes a source note and the dataset's last-verified date.

Waitlist and availability verification

We verify waitlist openings, lotteries, deadlines, and application windows against official agency pages, official portals, property websites, or property-published notices. If an announced date has passed and current status cannot be verified, we mark the page with “STATUS UPDATE NEEDED” instead of guessing whether a waitlist is open or closed.

Review schedule

  • Income-limit, AMI, eligibility, and program overview pages are reviewed when new official figures are published and at least annually.
  • Waitlist, lottery, application-window, and building-specific pages are reviewed when an announced date passes or when an official source publishes a change.
  • Listings and property-directory pages use the City of Chicago Open Data Portal as a property dataset, not as proof of current vacancies.
  • News articles keep their original publication context, with a visible status update added when later information changes or cannot be verified.

AI-assisted drafting

We may use AI-assisted drafting to organize outlines, simplify wording, summarize source documents, or prepare first drafts. AI output is not published as-is.

Before publication, factual claims are reviewed against official sources or qualified when the source does not prove the claim. AI is not used as an authority for eligibility, income limits, waitlist status, availability, rent limits, program rules, or legal conclusions.

Corrections Policy

If a reader, property, agency, or official source identifies an error, we review the cited source, update the affected page when warranted, and adjust related pages if the same issue appears elsewhere.

For time-sensitive opportunities, we preserve historical reporting where appropriate and add a visible status update near the top rather than silently changing the record of what was originally announced.

Send corrections to info@chicagoaffordablehousing.org or use the contact page.

Eligibility limits

This website never makes official eligibility determinations. Calculators, checklists, and program-fit guidance are educational tools to help renters know where to start. Actual eligibility is confirmed by the specific agency, property, owner, or program administrator during application review.
