About Chicago Affordable Housing Guide
An independent, free resource helping Chicago residents find affordable housing

Helping Chicago Find Home
Affordable housing in Chicago comes with a lot of names — ARO, Section 8, CHA — and even more paperwork. Our mission is simple: help you understand what these programs actually are, whether you qualify, and how to apply, without needing a lawyer or a caseworker to translate it for you.
We started this because the demand for affordable housing in Chicago is enormous, and the guidance available to renters trying to navigate it is not. Program websites are built for compliance, not for people. We wanted something different: a place where the first question isn't "which acronym applies to me" but "what do I actually need to do."
A few things we want to be upfront about. We are not a government agency — we don't run ARO, Section 8, or CHA, and we can't speed up a waitlist or guarantee a unit. We're not a landlord. And we're not a listing service that charges renters a fee to access housing information. We're an independent guide, and our job is to make the real programs easier to understand and easier to act on.
We take accuracy seriously. Program details, income limits, and application steps are reviewed regularly against official sources, including the Chicago Housing Authority and the City of Chicago, so what you're reading here reflects how things actually work right now, not how they worked two years ago.
This site started because we kept hearing the same thing from renters: "I didn't even know I might qualify." That's the gap we're here to close, one clear answer at a time.
Have a question we haven't answered yet? We'd love to help — reach out here.
What We Stand For
Independent & free
Every guide, calculator, and listing on this site is free to use. We're not a brokerage, a landlord, or a government agency.
Renter-first
We write from the perspective of the person trying to find a home — not the property owner or the program administrator.
Accurate & current
We pull live ARO listing data directly from the City of Chicago Open Data Portal and verify program rules against official sources.
How the Site Works
Live ARO listings from the City of Chicago
Our ARO listings page pulls live data directly from the City of Chicago Open Data Portal, so the buildings and contact details you see reflect what the city has on file — not stale third-party scrapes.
Original guides, calculators, and eligibility tools
We supplement that data with original content: an AMI calculator, income-limit breakdowns, document checklists, and program-by-program application walk-throughs — written in plain English and updated as program rules change.
What We Cover
ARO Apartments
Below-market units created by the Affordable Requirements Ordinance in new Chicago developments.
Section 8 Vouchers
The Housing Choice Voucher program that helps eligible renters pay for housing on the private market.
CHA Programs
Chicago Housing Authority public housing, mixed-income developments, and waiting list information.
Tools & Calculators
AMI calculators, eligibility checks, document checklists, and step-by-step application guides.
Who Runs This Site
Chicago Affordable Housing Guide is maintained by the Chicago Affordable Housing Guide Editorial Team, a Chicago-based editorial team researching affordable housing programs using City of Chicago, CHA, HUD, property-level, and other primary sources.
The site's founder works in Chicago residential leasing. This site is an independent personal project. It does not feature, promote, or accept payment from any property, and no employer reviews or directs its content.
We keep the team byline where individual authors are not available. We do not claim professional licenses, government employment, legal expertise, or housing-authority credentials.
